The residence nil-rate band
The residence nil-rate band adds up to £175,000 per person when a home, or its value, passes to direct descendants including children, stepchildren and grandchildren. Unused amounts transfer to a surviving spouse. It tapers away for estates above £2 million and is lost if the home passes to siblings, nieces, nephews or certain trusts, so Will drafting must be precise. Will trusts must also be carefully drafted to qualify, because some discretionary trusts do not count as passing to direct descendants. A Will review can protect up to £350,000 of allowances for a couple.
